To become a member of DRPC you will need to attend an Orientation that will last approximately 3 hours. In an effort to be sure all members of DRPC have at least a rudimentary understanding of gun safety and gun handling ability, you will have to demonstrate safe gun handling skills and shooting ability that meets our minimum standards. If you attend the orientation but do not exhibit the required skills you will not be able to join for this year. You are welcome to re-apply next year. The video demonstrates the requirments for this.
Outline of Minimum Acceptable Skills
1. Lock the slide back, place the gun on the table with the ejection port facing up. You must do this while keeping the muzzle pointed down range.
2. Load your magazine to 10 rounds.
3. When instructed pick up your firearm, install the magazine and then release the slide engaging a round into the chamber. Then go to the compressed low ready position and wait for instructions from the safety officer.
(Your shooting distance is 7 yards at a cardboard target that is torso shaped and approximately 18" x 24")
4. When given the command, engage the target with five rounds. There is no time limit. When finished assume the compressed low ready position, wait for all shooters to finish and then wait for instructions from the safety officer.
5. When instructed to resume shooting engage the target with five additional rounds.
6. Remain at the low compressed ready position until instructed to drop your magazine, lock the slide back ejecting the round from the chamber. Keep the muzzle pointed down range and then place the firearm on the table with the ejection port facing up.
If you are shooting a revolver you will need to exhibit the same skills while loading the cylinder of the revolver.
What to do if you do not have these skills?
If you do not have ability to do all of these steps with skill and confidence you need to seek out some form of instruction. The easiest but not necessarily the best option is to seek out a friend or family member to help train you to get your skill level to where it needs to be.
Formal training from a firearms instructor is your best option. There are many training options in our area. Taking an NRA Basic Pistol class should teach you these skills. Another option would be some private one on one training. This can be had for approximately $50 per hour. For most people a good instructor should be able to get you to our minimum standards in a one hour session. Here are two options for training.
